Septentrion means the northern regions or “of the north”. Its Latin origin refers to the seven stars of the Plough or the Big Dipper, occasionally called the Septentrion. Septentrional was and is still sometimes used in astronomy to indicate the northern direction on the celestial globe, together with Meridional for southern, Oriental for eastern and Occidental for western.
